STYLING OUR DISH CABINET
When we were shopping for our home, this cabinet was the first item Nick and I fell in love with. It set the tone for our entire home. It had a really special, unique quality to it. I intended to use it for extra dish storage as our kitchen doesn’t have a ton of space and I love to collect dishes. It’s turned out to be a perfect place to do just that and additionally a perfect place for me to display sentimental items where we can see them everyday.
When I first began styling the cabinet I made a rule that everything that would go inside it would be a neutral colour. Since it was an open cabinet in the centre of our living room it needed to match the look and feel of the rest of the room.
I edited our dishwater a pulled out the prettiest and most neutral pieces that would feel like decor. I used my fancy plates, mugs and serve ware.
I then layered in sentimental items like our champagne glasses that my parents gifted Nick and I for our wedding, a beautiful set of bird salt and pepper shakers Nick’s sister gifted me earlier on in our relationship and this beautiful dried floral arrangement my wedding florist placed ontop of a vase she gift Nick and I.
I try to make sure that the space is functional and beautiful by mixing sentimental items and more useful items that still go with the vibe of the room.
Here you see a neutral crystal that adds texture, our wedding menu and a jar of sugar I can use when baking or making my morning coffee. The corks are also from the first bottle of champagne we ever opened in our new home.
The best advice I can give when taking a project like this on in your home is to:
1. make sure all colours used throughout the cabinet or shelves are in keeping with the room
2. add texture with both functional and sentimental objects.
3. display your functional but beautiful items like dishes, serving dishes, cake plates, napkins…etc.
4. layer and stack items to create varying heights and interest. I use books to lift items if needed and stack other items ontop of others for a more interesting composition.
