7 WAYS TO GET OUT

OF BED AND TO THE GYM

Let’s be honest, we’ve all hit the snooze button on our alarms in the morning. It can be so hard to get out of bed, especially in the winter when you want to stay wrapped up in your cozy sheets (I am a human burrito every morning). As someone whose been hitting the snooze button for over a year, I’m sharing how I finally managed to get my butt out of bed and to the gym at 5:30am.

start a night time routine

If you have a hard time going to bed early, start a nighttime (I’ll be sharing mine soon) routine that you look forward to and set a time to start it. I like to start mine between 8 and 9pm. To give you a glimpse into what mine is looking like these days: I like to get into my pj’s, pour myself one last big glass of water to down before going to sleep, take my make-up off, apply a 20 minute face mask, and watch an episode of my favorite show or read a book while I wait to wash it off.

set a bed time for yourself

Look at when you want to get up (for me it’s 5:30am) and give yourself at least 7 1/2 hours of sleep. For me that means going to bed between 9 and 10pm.

read a book

If you can’t get to sleep that early just yet, give your eyes a break from screens and read a book to tire your eyes out. Here are some of my favorite books.

lay out your workout clothes

set aside your workout clothes before you go to bed. That way in the morning you just have to slip into them and out the door.

invest in a sleep app

I started using sleep cycle a few months ago and it’s been great. It tracks how many hours you slept and wakes you up when you’re in a more light sleep so that it’s easier to wake up.

turn on the lights

if you’re alarm goes off and your tempted to hit snooze or decide you’d rather sleep in and go tomorrow, flip on your lights or your lamp. It will help wake you up. Also, keep your book on your nightstand and maybe read another chapter to ease yourself back to life in the morning.

go earlier than you need to

5:30 am may seem crazy early, but Nick and I have found that by setting our alarms at 5:30 am it gives about a half hour to motivate ourselves to get out the door. It also gives us time to relax in the morning when we get back, enjoy a coffee or breakfast together. It’s a really nice way to start the morning.

If you’re still struggling, remember the first time is the hardest. Once you’ve gone once, you know you can do it and are far more likely to turn it into a habit.
